This post is clearly Dangerous. Be warned.
Buffer image.
I found the video below while searching for the tune with the catchy bass line that popped up in my playlist yesterday. The song is part political statement, part creep show, and part tinfoil hat, with a dash of romance (?) thrown in. The video is a slam on consumerism and a commentary on the use of sex and violence in marketing. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , so I won’t insult them by replicating their work. Go read it for yourself.
Or just enjoy a catchy tune.

I’ve liked that song for a while but I still did not understand any of that. Honestly, I could do without.
This is more my speed.

I have never seen that video. It’s a bit of a shame it didn’t end with the women running into the m eeting room and bea ting the marketers to death.

Generational differences. I cut my teeth on hard rock and “classic” rock while also being exposed to classical, jazz, and, strangely enough, dance/ new wave/electronica/alternative (girls will do that to you) . My tastes shifted to alternative rock , but I didn’t take the deep dive into grunge, garage, psychede lic or metal. Cage t he Elephant had a few hits which I enjoy but most of their songs are a bit too dischordant for my taste.

I’ve really enjoyed their latest album, Social Cues . I listened to it on repeat for like a solid month. That, and Twenty One Pilots’ Trench were my favorite albums of last year. It took me a bit to warm up to them but they were fantastic. You said “discordant ” and I can get that. I’m also quite a big fan of Gorillaz so that might explain some things.
I’ve always leaned towards alt rock but my tastes are extremely varied. Some classic rock, other folk and country (well, very little modern pop country) and blues tinged stuff. My parents have great taste in music and introduced me to Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and even Joan Baez at a young age.
But of course I was also exposed to more modern singers in a more classic tradition. Aimee Mann and Neko Case I especially like. Then there’s Wilco/Uncle Tupelo/Sun Volt which I’ve really been getting back into lately. I’m glad I got a well rounded musical repertoire from my parents but I’ve discovered a lot of stuff on my own.

That’s great! I lean to the rock side of things with Foo Fighters, Incubus, Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc. I also like to get more alternative with bands like Cake. When I have to concentrate, I’ll put on Chris Proctor or Tim Snow, two of my favorite classical guitarists. Big band jazz like the Glenn Miller Orchestra is preferable to modern free-form jazz. That’s my years of band coming back to influence me.
I believe I influenced my kids and their friends. I’ve caught my daughter listening to some of my playlists. My son asked for a copy of all our mp3s from the CDs we ripped back in the early ‘90s. It’s good to see them listen to our favorites and still share with us the new things they’ve heard.
